I'm adding my GL accounts and I am trying to create an account hierarchy for our P/L accounts. There were some preexisting summary accounts (i.e. Non-Operating Expenses) that I added some children to. The problem is that I cannot make this summary account "roll up" to another account. The account details states "None" in the "Rolls up to" setting and I cannot edit it. What is the solution?
The preexisting account structure is also known as root accounts. You are not able to re-parent the accounts at this level. You can build out account structures under these levels, but you cannot move them in the structure.
If you have a case where you want one of the root accounts to roll up to another root account, you would have to create a sub-account under that root account and then move the existing lower level accounts into it. For example, if you wanted your Non-Operating Expenses category to roll up to PL Expenses, you would have to create a new account under PL Expenses called Non-Op Expenses and then move the accounts that currently exist under the root Non-Operating Expenses account.
When you create a new account, it does not automatically appear in the Rolls up to list. Only parent accounts (accounts that have sub-accounts) appear in this list. In order to get this new account level in the Rolls up to list, you will need to create a child "dummy" account under that account, and then you will have the option to move accounts into the category.
If you are just getting started with your model build and you have not input any data (values or formulas) into your GL accounts, you could re-import your GL structure.
