Import Attributes, Custom Dimensions, and Dimension Mappings

Explains how to import changes to your attributes, custom dimensions, and mapping dimensions.

Create many attribute, dimensions and values, dimension mappings, or make bulk updates to existing ones with the import function. To do this, either export the current structure, which you can modify in Excel or download the Excel template.

Prerequisites

Required permissions: 

  • Model Management Access > Model
  • Structure Import

Navigation

Navigation Icon5.png From the nav menu, go to Modeling. Select Level AttributesDimension Attributes or Account Attributes. Use the first drop-down in the toolbar to get to the different kinds of attributes.

Import Options

  • Update: Edits existing elements only. You must export the elements first.
  • Append: Adds new elements and leaves existing ones as-is. You must use the template.
  • Reload Entire Structure: Deletes all existing elements and their data and loads a new structured list. You must use the template.
  • Reload Entire Dimensions (for custom dimensions only): Updates only the dimensions in the import, adds new dimensions and values, and leaves any dimensions not in the import as-is. Export the existing structure or use the template.
  • Reload Mappings (for custom dimensions enabled for dimension mapping): Deletes existing dimension mappings for the dimension and loads new dimension mappings. Export the existing mapping or use the template.

Reload Entire Structure and Reload Entire Dimensions deletes all the related data.

Import Attributes

Add Attributes (Append or Reload the Entire Structure)

First find and complete the template. Then, upload the completed template.

  1. Select Import Structure from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  2. From the pop-up window, select the Download template link. 
  3. Complete the template and save the file to your computer.
    • The first sheet has instructions on how to use the template.
    • The second sheet is the template for you to complete and import. 
  4. Return to the appropriate screen, and click Import Structure from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
    • Select Append to add new elements to the hierarchy list. Don't include any existing elements in the spreadsheet.
    • Select Reload Entire Structure to update only the attributes in the import, add new attributes and values, and leave any attributes not in the import as-is.
  5. Click Choose File. Browse your files and select the template spreadsheet. Then select Upload

Check the hierarchy list to ensure that they uploaded as you expected.

Bulk Edit Existing Attributes (Update)

To import updates, first export the current structure. Then, import the changes.

  1. From the toolbar, click Printable View to open the entire structure in Excel.
  2. Update the existing elements and save. Do not add any elements.
  3. Return to the appropriate screen, and select Import Structure from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  4. Choose the Update radio button.
  5. Select Choose File. Then browse to select the saved spreadsheet.
  6. Select Upload.

Check the updated hierarchy to make sure it has updated as you expected.

Import Dimensions

Add Dimensions (Append)

  1. Find and update the template. 
  2. Return to the appropriate screen, and click the Import Structure button from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  3. Click Append to add new elements to the hierarchy list. Don't include any existing elements in the spreadsheet.
  4. Select Choose File to select the updated template spreadsheet and select Upload

Bulk Edit Dimensions (Update)

To import updates, first export the current structure. Then, import the changes.

  1. From the toolbar, click Printable View to open the entire structure in Excel.
  2. Update the existing elements and save. Do not add any elements.
  3. Return to the appropriate screen, and select Import Structure from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  4. Choose the Update radio button.
  5. Select Choose File. Then browse to select the saved spreadsheet.
  6. Select Upload.

Check the updated hierarchy to make sure it has updated as you expected.

Bulk Edit and Add Dimensions (Reload Entire Dimension)

The Reload Entire Dimension lets you import updates and additions in one step, while maintaining existing dimensions.

  1. Either export the structure to make changes and additions, or download the template to make additions. 
  2. Return to the appropriate screen, and click Import Structure from the toolbar. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  3. Select Reload Entire Dimension.

Import Dimension Mappings

Add Dimension Mappings (Append)

Download the Template

  1. Select a dimension with Use mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheets enabled
  2. Click the Import Dimension Structure dropdown > Dimension Mapping Import > Download Template link.
  3. Save the template to your computer so you can make changes.

 Append

  1. Update the dimension mapping template.
  2. In Modeling, select a derived dimension. 
  3. Click the Import Dimension Structure dropdown > Dimension Mapping Import. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  4. Select Append to add new mapping rows. Don't include any existing mapping rows in the spreadsheet.
  5. Select a Version, then Choose File to select the updated template spreadsheet. 

Bulk Edit Dimension Mappings (Update)

To import updates, first export the current structure. Then, import the changes.

Export Dimension Mappings

  1. Select a dimension with Use mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheets enabled
  2. Click the Printable View dropdown > Export Dimension Mapping.
  3. Select a Version, then download and Save the file to your computer to make updates.

Update

  1. Update the existing mappings. Do not add any mapping rows.
  2. In Modeling, select a dimension with Use mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheets enabled. 
  3. Click the Import Dimension Structure dropdown > Dimension Mapping Import. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  4. Select Update, then a Version.
  5. Click Choose File to select the saved spreadsheet.

Bulk Edit and Add Dimension Mappings (Reload Mappings)

Deletes existing dimension mappings for the dimension and loads new dimension mappings.

  1. Either export the structure to make changes and additions, or download the template to make additions. 
  2. In Modeling, select a dimension with Use mapping criteria to set dimension value on modeled sheets enabled. 
  3. Click the Import Dimension Structure dropdown > Dimension Mapping Import. If you don't see this button, you don't have the Model Management > Import Structure permission.
  4. Select Reload Entire Dimension, then a Version.
  5. Click Choose File to select the saved spreadsheet.
