Create or Edit Level Dimensions or Attributes

Walks you through how to create an alternate hierarchy with level dimension or level attributes.

Audience: Admins who manage the model.

Level attributes are a specific type of attribute. You can make any dimension a level dimension.  Level attributes and dimensions appear as drop-downs in your level settings.

To create alternate hierarchies, choose values that tag the levels. Then, you can create reports and formulas with different level rollups. See Level Dimensions and Attributes for conceptual information.

For this walk-through, you'll create an alternate hierarchy. Start with a level hierarchy organized by departments (1st column). Then tag each level with either attributes or dimensions (2nd and 3rd columns).  The tags pivot the level hierarchy by region (4th column). Use the alternate rollups in formulas and create regional reports.

Create Level Dimensions or Attributes Basic Steps

  1. Create a dimension or attribute for levels. For dimension, you must select the checkbox for Use on levels.
  2. Create dimension or attribute values. 
  3. Tag the levels with dimension or attribute values.
  4. (optional) Add the dimension or attribute to sheets. See Building Sheets.
  5. Use the dimension or attribute in formulas and reports.

Naming Convention Best Practices

  • Don't use similar names for existing levels and level dimensions or attributes. For example: Name the sales levels West Coast Sales or West Coast Sales Level. Name the Region dimensions or attributes West Coast Region or West Coast Region Dimension. 

  • State in the name that the dimension or attribute is a level dimension/attribute. This makes it easier for you to filter the levels with dimensions in cube sheets. The reports are also easier to read.

  • Avoid using words that are common formula commands.

Create a Dimension or Attribute for Levels

Any dimension can be a level dimension, as long as the dimension is not a list dimension. 

  1. From the nav menu, select Modeling. Then select Dimensions or Level Attributes from the Level and Dimensions menu.
  2. Click the Create New  button from the toolbar.
  3. For name, enter Region Level Dimension or Region Level Attribute.
  4. For dimension, you must select the checkbox for Use on levels. If the you can't select the checkbox, uncheck List dimension.
  5. Save

The new dimension or attribute appears in the tree.  

Create Dimension or Attribute Values

  1. From the same screen, highlight the new dimension or attribute and click Create New Value from the toolbar.
  2. Enter East Coast Region for the name.
  3. Press enter or select Save

Repeat for remaining values: 

  • West Coast Region
  • Midwest Region
  • Southwest Region

Tag the Levels with Dimension or Attribute

  1. From the same screen, select Modeling from the breadcrumbs. 
  2. Select Levels from the Levels and Dimensions menu. 
  3. Expand G&A to highlight Finance
  4. From the settings, expand the Level Dimensions or the Level Attribute section. Each drop-down contains the values you created. For example, the drop-down called Region Level Dimension contains all the values you created: East Coast Region, West Coast Region, and so on.
  5. Choose East Coast from the drop-down and select Save.
  6. Read the prompts carefully and follow the instructions. 
  7. Repeat for the remaining levels, following the table at the start of this article.

When you update the dimensions and attributes of a parent level, you get validation pop ups with additional steps:

  • Attributes: The warning states that the attributes update for all child accounts. Select Yes. Then select Save. If the attribute values are hierarchical, you can update the child level settings to any of the child attributes. 
  • Dimensions:  The warning asks you to decide if you also want to update the child levels. Check or clear the checkbox next to Propagate changes to all of the level's sub-levels. Select SaveYou can still update each child level's dimension later. 

Reference an Alternate Level Rollup in Formulas

In the formulas you can reference the alternate rollup. In the example, you can see the Product Revenue account total for west coast levels only.
