# What are the differences between the Adaptive divide funtions and N/D?

**Question**

What is the purpose of the Div(N,D) and Divf(N,D) functions? Why can't I just use N/D?

**Answer**

The div function should be used to avoid divide by zero errors. If a formula divides by zero using the N/D function, a formula error will appear. With the Div function, the calculation will return a zero.

The Divf function will return the same value as Div, but is the faster than the div function. This is because with the Divf function, if the denominator is zero, the numerator is not evaluated. Unlike the Div function, if the denominator is zero, the result of this function is always valid even if the numerator contains an error. Div would report a "Refers to Invalid" error if its numerator is invalid, even if the denominator is zero.
