Create Dimensions and Dimension Values

Explains how to create new dimensions and dimension values.

Before You Begin

Required permission: Model Management Access > Model. 

How You Get There

Navigation Icon5.png From the nav menu, select Modeling. From the Levels and Dimension menu, select  Dimensions.

Create Dimensions 

  1. From the toolbar, select the New Dimension button. 

  2. Specify the dimension details. See Dimensions Overview.

  3. Once the dimension is created and saved, its values can be added. Select the dimension in the list, and click New Value. Dimension values can be created in hierarchies. Dimensions with hierarchical values cannot be assigned dimension attributes.

  4. To reorder a dimension value, click the dimension value, and click again to drag and drop it to its new location in the tree. Dimension values, including parents, are listed on sheet drop-down menus and in the reporting elements in the order in which they appear in this screen.

Once a dimension and its values have been established, you can add new values to an existing dimension.

Import a Dimension Structure

If you are going to add multiple dimensions and dimension values at once, it is generally faster to use the import function rather than create each one manually. To do this, you need to create a spreadsheet containing the new dimension and dimension value information in the correct format, then import it.

If you don't see the Import Dimension Structure importAccountStructureIcon.png button, the Structure Import permission needs to be added to your role or you need to be given a role with Structure Import Permission. 

When importing a dimension structure, you have these options:

Update Structure: This option updates the existing properties for the elements found in the uploaded spreadsheet. Typically you would download a Printable View, update its contents, then upload the resulting spreadsheet to apply the updates.

Append Structure: This option inserts all items found in the uploaded spreadsheet as new items in the dimension being imported. The uploaded spreadsheet cannot contain listings for any existing elements in the structure being imported. Append Structure Import cannot be used to change attributes or re-parent existing elements in a structure.

Reload Entire Structure: This option deletes all the items of that type, as well as all their associated data in Cube Sheets, and builds an entirely new tree from the specified import. Any data previously tagged with this dimension will become uncategorized in this dimension.

WARNING: Reload Entire Structure erases all existing dimension values of the dimensions you are importing, be sure to pick the right option!

Download the Template

  1. If you plan to use the Update option, select Printable View to download the existing structure.

Best Practice: Remove the rows you do not want to change.

  1. Select Import Dimension Structure in the toolbar.
  2. Select Download Template.
    A dialog letting you save or open the template appears. The template itself contains instructions for entering the information you are going to import. Open it in Microsoft Excel and follow the instructions.
  3. For Append or Reload, populate the import template with the desired entries you want to add.
  4. For Update, make changes to the Printable View spreadsheet you downloaded in step 2. Only include the rows in the spreadsheet for the dimensions you are intending to update to reduce the risk of accidentally changing the properties of other dimensions.
  5. Save the template to a convenient location on your computer.
  6. In the structure import popup window, select Choose File to locate and select the import file.
  7. Upload.

If the import file contains dimension names that are already in use and Reload is being used, an error message appears. Reload cannot be used to replace existing dimensions that are in use.
