Troubleshooting Import Errors and Recommended Solutions

Question

I have received several different error when importing. Is there a list of possible errors and how they can be resolved?

Answer

When importing data, there are two categories of errors that a user might encounter:

  • Errors displayed in the user interface – this appears on the import screen as “An error occurred on the previous request:” or “Error:”
  • Import file is invalid or not specified – this error typically occurs when the file is not in the correct format.  Make sure that the file you are attempting to import has either an .xlsx or .xls extension.
  • Error: Data in the spreadsheet for account 3500 plan 000 specifies more than one split, but that location in version Actuals contains no splits. You must create at least one split at that location in order to import.– If an unsplit account contains data in Adaptive Planning, you must first add one split to that location in the sheet in order to import split data.  By adding the first split, the user specifies how the existing data in the account is labeled.  If the account is empty, the splits are automatically created upon import.
  • Missing Required Field(s): Name ,Rolls Up To and An error occurred on the previous request: Row 2 is missing a value. Row 3 is missing a value.... - these errors typically occurs when the first few rows of the Import Template have been deleted, i.e., the Required and Optional headers. To allow the import to go through, you can either download a fresh import template and copy the data from the old template to the new template or add 3 rows to the beginning of the file that you are using currently.
  • An error occurred on the previous request: Column "null" is required or Import Failed with the following error: java.lang.NullPointerException - these errors typically occur when there are required columns in the import template that are not fully populated. Review the import file and populate any blanks in the required columns.
  • Invalid Dimension Choice: or Row X was not imported because xxx is unmapped - these errors typically occur when the dimension value has not been marked as available on the sheet. Go to the Modeled/Cube Sheet Builder and verify that the dimension value has been marked as available on the sheet.
    • An Exception Error- this appears as “An error has occurred processing your request.”  When you encounter an exception error, you will see a blank screen with the error message at the top. Here are a few things to check:
      • Check to see if there are any "#" characters in the spreadsheet. If there are, remove them.
      • Remove any formula driven cells form the import template.
      • If you are importing new structural elements, use Remove Duplicates in Excel to remove any duplicate values from the import file.
      • If the sheet is password protected, remove the password protection.
      • Check to see if there are frozen panes in the file.  If so, unfreeze them.
      • Remove any filters.
      • Remove any conditional formatting.
      • Remove macros.
      • Delete columns and rows outside of the data area.
      • Copy all data and paste special as values into the file.  If this does not work, try pasting it into a new template.
      • If you are importing to Custom or GL accounts and the data should not be tagged with Dimensions, be sure to delete any Dimension columns and leave the Split Label column blank.
