Grid Dial

Version: DiscoveryClassic

Explains how to create a grid dial from a freeform dashboard

Grid dials are only available on freeform dashboards. If you do not have a freeform dashboard yet, see Creating a Dashboard for information on how to do so.

To create a grid dial:

  1. Click Edit In Place  (or open the Visual Designer if you prefer).

  2. Expand the Component Library(edit in place only) by clicking Expand .
  3. Expand the folders in the Data components menu until you find a data series you want to include in the grid dial. In this example, add the account 1000 Assets.
  4. Drag the data series onto the dashboard where you want to store the grid dial.
    The Create New... dialog opens.
  5. Select Grid Dial from the list of dial types.
  6. Enter a name for your new dial.
  7. Select the folder in which you want to store your grid dial.
  8. Click Create.

After you have created the grid dial, the Data components menu lists more options, including Calculated Columns (these display the expression, percent variance, or variance of the other columns) and Rows (these include total, average, and other values calculated from the other rows in the dial). You can build up your grid dial much the same way you would build a report.

Add More Rows and Columns

You can fill in your grid dial by dragging items from the Data components onto it. You see small blue arrows indicating where you are inserting the row or column, as shown below.

Variance Column

To add more rows and columns in this example:

  1. Drag the account 2000 Liabilities from the Metrics folder onto the dial.
  2. Drag the account 3000 Equity from the $ folder onto the dial.
At this point the dial is too narrow to display the columns clearly, so mouse over the right edge, then click and drag it to make the dial wider. The dial now looks like the one shown:

  3. Next, add a column for time. In the Periods folder of the Data components menu, find Base.
  4. Click and drag Base onto the grid dial, positioning it at the far left. This adds a column with rows for the base time period of your instance. In this case, the base period is months, which roll up into quarters, so the column shows three quarters of data:

When you add further columns that subdivide the grid’s rows, the already subdivided rows are also divided. For this example, drag Level from the Dimensions folder onto the grid, and position it to the right of the Period column.

The grid now looks like the following:

The addition of the Level column has generated enough rows that the grid dial is too short to display them all, and there is now a scroll bar on the right side.

To get rid of the scroll bar, mouse-over the lower border of the dial and drag it downward.

Formatting

Grid dials let you format columns and to set up conditional formatting rules.

To format a column in a grid dial, do the following:

  1. Mouse-over the heading of the Period column and click the drop-down arrow:

Drop-down Arrow for Accessing Column Properties Editor

    The Properties window appears.

  2. Click the Display tab.
  3. For this example, use the following appearance settings:

  • Alignment: Left
  • Background color: light blue
  • After selecting the settings, click Apply.
  • Click Close.

The dial now looks like the following:

Next, set conditional formatting:

[20000 Liabilities]<200000

  1. Open the Properties window for the Liabilities column.
  2. Click Conditional Formatting.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Click Edit for the new rule.
  5. Enter the following formula:
  6. Save.
  7. With the new rule highlighted, set the formatting as follows:
  • Foreground color: red (#FF0000)FF0000)
  • Background color: yellow (#FFFF00)
  • Format: Bold
  • Click Apply, then Close.

The dial now looks like the following:

This dial is complete. You can sort the rows of your grid dial by the individual columns. Be sure to click Save in the Actions menu.
