Manage Perspectives and Dashboards

Explains how to create a perspective and dashboard using  the Discovery new user interface. Includes how to manage perspective contexts and how to rename, delete and duplicate dashboards.

A perspective is a group of dashboards and charts, usually focused on a common function such as finance or sales.

When you access Discovery, you start on the Perspectives Overview, a collection of perspectives that you have access to.

Perspectives are personal (private for your eyes only) or shared (accessible by others). This page may be empty until you and other users start building perspectives and sharing. These folders are contextual and will appear on your Perspectives page only when content is available from them. Personal and Shared folders indicate the number of perspectives available from each. When you create a perspective, it is personal by default. You can share your perspective with others.

A dashboard is a container for grouping a series of charts or other data analysis often by a theme or subject.

An Executive Summary perspective can have dashboards for Revenue, Financial Health, and Operations. Each dashboard includes charts that provide insight to that area of the business.

You must be in Edit Mode to change the name of dashboard tab labels or to add dashboards to a perspective. To edit a dashboard, keep the focus on the dashboard (that is, not on any chart). If the focus is on a chart, you will edit the settings of the selected chart.

Create and Manage a Perspective

Required Permission: Access Discovery and ability to edit Discovery dashboards (personal or shared).

Create a Perspective

  1. From the Perspectives page, click New Icon to create a perspective. Enter a title, and click OK. The detail page for the perspective is created with a default dashboard, named Dashboard. For example, create a perspective titled: Executive Summary.

  2. Click Edit Mode Icon from the toolbar to rename the default dashboard and build more dashboards and charts. Or,
Click the Discovery link (at the top) to navigate back to the Perspectives page to create another perspective or to navigate to another perspective.

Edit a Perspective and Manage Context Filters

You can change the 1 perspective name or add or remove 2 context filters from the perspective context. You must be in edit mode to make these changes.

Example Perspective Title Bar and default Perspective Context

When viewing charts from this perspective, you can change the scope of data factored into the chart based on the values you select from the drop-down filter.

Level and Currency are permanent default context filters. You cannot remove them.

Open a perspective in Edit mode
  1. From the Perspectives Overview, open the perspective and click Edit Mode Icon from the toolbar.
  2. Click the perspective title in the toolbar.

The Appearance and Data Settings tabs for the perspective display in the right panel. You can edit the perspective.

Change the perspective time

You can choose a different time period for each of your perspectives in View or Edit mode to dynamically view different sets of data with the same chart.

  1. Before you change the time, make sure that any chart you want to adjust is unpinned. Pinned charts won't change.
  2. From the toolbar, click the date and choose a time period from the dropdown.

Perspective Time button on the toolbar

All the unpinned charts will update to the time period you select:

  • disc-unpinnedIcon.pngUnpinned Charts with single period time settings change to the exact same time period you select from the perspective toolbar. For example, if you select June 2017, single time periods on charts change to June, Q2, and 2016.
  • disc-unpinnedIcon.pngUnpinned Charts with time range settings move forward or backward in synch with the global offset. For example, if you move the time two months forward, time ranges on charts move two months forward: January 2016-December 2016 changes to March 2016-February 2017.
  • Disc-pinnedIcon.pngPinned charts: don't change or adjust because the time setting overrides the global time setting. You can temporarily unpin a chart before you adjust the time in the toolbar and it will adjust.

Changing the perspective time does not change the time settings on the charts, only the current display. To revert to the chart's time setting, click DIS-timeResetIcon.png on the chart's time toolbar.

When you duplicate a dashboard, the copy is added to the right of the originating dashboard and appends - Copy to the dashboard name and increments by 1 for each additional copy. For example, the first duplicate is Quarterly Summary - Copy and the second duplicate is Quarterly Summary - Copy (1)
